A connected reading of the building

Amberdunesracon is an independent English-language publication about professional handball arena design. We write for venue planners developing a brief, clubs considering facilities and spectators who want to understand why some buildings feel easier to use than others.

Our central idea is simple: a venue is a set of connected journeys. A seat cannot be evaluated without its approach. A dressing room cannot be evaluated without its route to the floor. A flexible arena cannot be evaluated without its stores and loading access. Treating each room as a separate success can conceal a building that is difficult to operate as a whole.

Trade-offs, made visible

Design involves choices between legitimate needs. Bringing spectators closer can reduce operational space. A steeper bowl can improve clearance while complicating access. More event configurations can increase revenue opportunities while demanding greater storage and staffing. We aim to explain these tensions without pretending that every project has the same answer.

The editorial voice is an architectural essay rather than a product catalogue. We do not rank venues, certify designs or present a photograph as proof of operational quality. Named arenas are real-world reference points for further study, not endorsements or claims of project involvement.

Guidance is not a standard

We distinguish general design reasoning from applicable requirements. Regulations, adopted standards and competition documents vary by jurisdiction, edition and event level. A reference to the IHF, EHF, a European standard or the Green Guide should lead to the current source and a competent project team, not replace either.

We are not affiliated with the International Handball Federation, European Handball Federation, standards organisations or the venue operators mentioned on this site. The publication does not offer engineering, architectural, medical, legal or safety certification.

If you identify a factual error, please send the page address, the passage concerned and a reliable source through our contact route. Please distinguish a correction from a project-specific question; we cannot determine compliance from a short message or an isolated drawing.
